We all have a slightly increased risk of dental problems as we age, not by the aging process itself, but oral disease and decay. For example, most people don’t realize how important it is to take care of their gums. If teeth and gums are not properly cared for, gingivitis and gum disease can result. Most adults do show signs of gum disease, and severe gum disease affects about 25 percent of people between 65 and 74 years of age. This can eventually lead to tooth loss if untreated, especially in patients who suffer from osteoporosis. If daily oral hygiene is too difficult, your dentist can provide alternative ideas. However, none of this should be of too much concern you practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis and keep routine dental visits for exams and professional cleanings.
